She took modelling classes at the age of 14, and performed a monologue from the play ?To Kill A Mockingbird?. After this she found herself an agent, and found herself in a small role in ?The Ice Storm?.
Katie has appeared in many movies, ?Disturbing Behaviour? in 1998, where though she hated her role, she received an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Performance. In 1990 she starred in ?Go?, ?Muppets in Space? and ?Teaching Mrs Tingle?. She received disapproval after she had her first nude scene in the film ?The Gift?.
In 1997, she auditioned through video tape for ?Joey Potter? in ?Dawson?s Creek?. This brought attention to her and she started to appear on the covers of magazines and being asked for interviews.

In 2005 she started to date Tom Cruise, and after he appeared on the ?Oprah Winfrey Show? and declared his love for her, they got engaged. Although many people believe this is a publicity stunt, Katie and Tom are very happy together and have since had a baby girl, Suri, and have gotten married.
