Sir Paul McCartney

Date of Birth: 18/06/1942

Place of Birth: Liverpool, England

About:

Paul was encouraged to be musical by his father who was a self taught pianist. He was originally given a trumpet but did not get on with it and later swapped it for a Zenith acoustic guitar (which he still has). When his mother died of an early age, he became close to John Lennon who had gone through the same situation. They both found comfort in playing music.

The song, Yesterday, was written by Paul and has been covered by over 2,500 artists. He also wrote the classics Hey Jude, Let It Be and The Long and Winding Road.

Lennon invited McCartney to join his group The Quarrrymen. A school friend of McCartney?s: George Harrison joined as the third guitarist. Ringo Starr later became the drummer in 1962, and this formed the final line up.

The song, Yesterday, was written by Paul and has been covered by over 2,500 artists. He also wrote the classics Hey Jude, Let It Be and The Long and Winding Road.

During The Beatles years, McCartney rose quickly as a musician, singer and songwriter. He has also become known as a bassist by inspiring people to play the instrument.

McCartney married his first wife: Linda Eastman in 1969. Paul adopted Linda?s child Heather, and they had three children of their own: Mary, Stella and James Louis. After only spending a week apart, their marriage ended when Linda died in 1998 from breast cancer.

McCartney was the first British pop star to admit to using LSD, but did not become addicted as the other group members did.

He was the first member of The Beatles to record something outside the group. He created a soundtrack for the film: The Family Way and created recordings for other artists.

McCartney tried to bring the group together in 1969, despite bickering, jealousy and the pressures of being famous. John Lennon was the first to leave the group and subsequently, McCartney announced the group had split on April 10th 1970.

Despite the years of bickering McCartney and Lennon put their differences aside, before Lennon died in 1980.

Paul launched a solo career not long after The Beatles split. His album entitled: McCartney, featured him playing all the instruments and doing all the singing, apart from some backing vocals, provided by Linda, his wife. This album featured Maybe I?m Amazed which became a centre piece of all his concerts. His second album: Ram was popular and is seen as his greatest piece of work since The Beatles.

Paul McCartney made sure his wife Linda was always involved in his music. Linda was invaluable.

In 1970, Paul became a member of the group Wings and created like: Live and Let Die and Mull of Kintyre.

When Wings came to an end McCartney carried on his solo career. He was arrested in Japan for having marijuana and was deported after nine days in prison.

He re-released his first album which went straight to number one in the UK. McCartney next album: Tug of War was hugely successful and contained duets with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. It also contained Here Today which was created in memory of John Lennon.

McCartney released another album in 1983: Pipes of Peace which topped the charts. The film Give My Regards to Broad Street was written by and featured Paul McCartney.

In 1996, Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts opened, which Paul founded.

In the 1980?s Paul begun to write songs with Elvis Costello after a failing album. Hits included Veronica and My Brave Face.

The Paul McCartney World Tour in 1989 and 1990 was a massive success and was a sell out all over the world. The album Off the Ground provoked another world tour.

Both Linda and Paul became vegetarians and Linda created her own line of food with no meat or genetically modified organisms. They also became animal rights activists.

George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney came together in 1995 to release The Beatles Anthology.

Paul McCartney was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II on 11th March 1997.

In the same year, Paul released Run Devil Run and featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist.

After the September 11th attacks, Paul took a lead role in organising The Concert for New York City. The concert also featured: Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, The Who, Elton John and Mick Jagger.

In 2002, Paul married Heather Mills and they have a daughter together, Beatrice, but later divorced her in 2006.

In 2005, McCartney released Chaos and Creation in the Backyard and released a children?s book named: High in the Clouds: An Urban Furry Tail.

When Paul celebrated his 64th birthday, he put a new meaning to the song When I?m Sixty-Four, which he wrote when he was 16.

Paul appears in the Guinness Book of Records several time for several things including: the most covered song (Yesterday) and the largest stadium audience (184,000 people saw him perform in Rio de Janerio). He has had 29 US number ?one hits, 20 of which was with The Beatles. McCartney is the richest rock star in the world and was made an honorary detective by the NYPD.
